5. ONGOING: Artwork at Haus Salon

Anna Chambers-Goldberg - the woman behind the curtain at ACG - has a collection of textile-based paintings on display at Haus Salon in downtown Mpls. Go get a rad new 'do and see some artworks unlike any you've seen before.

Note about these beautiful photographs: taken by local photographer Hanna Voxland, this experimental series captures a poetic je ne sais quoi we've been chasing for some time. The full series will be online shortly, you won't be able to miss it.

That time went to the Vermont woods and photographed the Split Jacket; By the Chambers-Goldberg family; Micah's photography, Tiffany's talent, Anna's styling.

While the kids played with Pop-pop and their aunt and uncle, their parents turned into my creative team. Micah is an art director and animator by trade, so he easily stepped into the photography and directing roles. Tiffany has experience with modeling and performance, and is a gosh-darn babe, so that was a no-brainer. And I was happy to be wearing one less hat, styling and creative directing without worrying about also taking all the pictures.

Walking down the hill into the woods in high heels wasn't easy, but Tiffany can handle anything. As the sun sank, faster than we thought, the light did magical things with the treetops. We almost saw fairies. With Pandora adding her magic to the sounds of the forest, we were vibing. Aside from a too late lunch (because what artist remembers to eat beforehand?) and some technical difficulties with the camera, this shoot was a lovely collaboration. Enjoy!

A little something about darkness

Darkness can feel good. Literal darkness, waiting to turn on a light, counter-intuitive but actually sometimes really intuitive. Watching the headlight shadows slide across the wall. Figurative darkness, opening the closets of the heart and looking at what's stored there, even without the intent or need to change it. Winter laying itself on us, reminding us how much we love blankets.

Here are some views playing with the approaching twilight, appreciating the growing darkness of it. Clothing by ACG, Jewelry by ILO, Photography by Anna Chambers-Goldberg.

Spring Styles We Love!

Hi there reader! It's been a while since we posted in the blog, so we decided to start out with something super fun. Spring style! And not just ACG spring style, but delicious finds from other makers as well!

Let's begin by talking politics.  Slow Fashion is a growing movement, committed to sustainable business practices that are good for our economies and communities. Sounds great right!? But in all honesty it can be hard to: A. Do the research (aka, take the precious TIME) to find awesome and affordable companies also committed to sustainable design, B. Resist the impulse to give in to the very effective, well-designed ads by fast-fashion companies, and C. Pay more for stuff!

So here at ACG, we're helping you out.

We've compiled a spring shopping guide full of delicious design and all under the umbrella of Slow Fashion. You are truly getting what you pay for here- quality, great design, and investment in small-scale, independent business. These are our favorite pieces wear for spring/summer 2017, either as a capsule collection or sprinkled in with the rest of your wardrobe. But check out what else these companies have to offer, you won't be disappointed!

Our theme this season is FEMINAL (feminine + minimal.) We are moving away from the boxy minimalism of the last few years and returning to the super fun notion of sex appeal! With one foot in the practical box and the other in the feelin-real-good box, we are so pumped to get out in the sun and enjoy ourselves.

Shop away, and feel ZERO guilt.

  1. WINSOME - The Mabel Dress

We love this take on the denim dress. First, and most important, POCKETS. Yes. Enough said. The raw edge denim is somehow both trendy and timeless, and the flattering neckline leaves you confident and ready for a good day. With Winsome Goods you always get perfect construction and cutting-edge design. Get yours here.

2. TESSA LOUISE - The Maxine Maxi

This versatile piece by Minneapolis designer Tessa Louise totally conjures our FEMINAL dream. Three things immediately won us over with this date-night piece- A. POCKETS (again, because we loove them) B. It's Reversible! Deep V in the back or in the front, depending on how much you feel like showing off that day. C. Classy design. Tessa Louise is known for their pitch-perfect design, flattering to all body types, while staying rooted in practicality. This dress will be easy to wear.  Check it out!

3. ACG - The workday blouse

Our Workday blouse does that favorite day-to-night transition so well. It's a blouse/t-shirt hybrid that feels feminine and soft yet contemporary. The washed silk crepe is luxurious AND washable, and there are ACG signature raw edges at the hem and center seam detail. Also available in BLACK! Check it out here.

4. elizabeth suzann - the tilda pant

Elizabeth Suzann makes the kind of timeless pieces you will own literally forever. While they stay true to their minimal aesthetic, their designs are flattering and again, timeless. Investment pieces in the best way. At the top of our list is the Tilda Pant - A loung-y silk pant that, like our other favorites, cross the dressy/casual line perfectly. They have several colors available, but we love this peachy neutral. Reminiscent of khakis, but so much better, this color makes us want to drink champagne at a sidewalk cafe. See what you think here

This is the perfect summer slip top. From one of our favorite boutiques, Semblance, this will carry you into warmer weather in the flirtiest way. Designer Lily Stan is a favorite among die-hard minimalists, us included. Like our other picks this spring, this piece perfectly balances minimalism with femininity, and keeps it's eye on comfort. Take a look here.

6. ACG - Boss shorts

It's hard to find good shorts right now. For some reason, our go-to brands for quality fashion aren't serving up this summer staple. So we designed a pair to meet our needs. The Boss Shorts are the short version of our Boss Pants - a legging/trouser hybrid designed to look professional and feel as comfortable as possible. The shorts feature the same hybrid fabric combo; cotton-lycra inseam and waistband, raw silk hip and pocket. The raw silk has a frayed hem, harking back to frayed denim, but the legging interior region keeps you cool and comfy. High waisted and ultra comfortable, these will be your best shorts ever. (Pictured with the High Tea BlouseGet yours here.

7. Strey designs - the Meander tote

The Meander Tote is our latest favorite from Minneapolis accessory designer Strey Designs. Their leather choices are on point, and their commitment to practicality and user-friendly design make their stylish bags even more covetable. Meander has an inside pocket, key clip, and is large enough for a day trip to the beach. We tote-ally love this bag! Check it out here!

We literally could not find a single pair of ethically made, well-designed sandals to share with you. So please, enlighten us! Share your favorite summer sandals, especially ones made by hand or in the US, with ethical labor and sourcing. We look forward to hearing your suggestions! Happy spring!

Love, ACG

*THE A-LINE BLAZER* Newest member of ACG Basics

Our latest basics release: A simple, clean blazer for every day of the week

This blazer is another one of our pieces that we have worked and reworked for the past several years. We have finally achieved what we set out to: a basic among basics, a warm layer that isn't too casual or too dressy, and can serve a thousand purposes in the modern wardrobe. This piece would make an essential addition to a Capsule Wardrobe. It is so basic that it stands out- simplicity calling subtle attention to itself, a line so perfect it can't be ignored.

True to our brand, the texture is key here. A sensual, smooth wool that could be worn in any season, more luxurious than most blazers but not as heavy as a peacoat. We left the curved hem raw: keeping the cleanest of lines, and adding just a hint of edge and spunk. The absence of a collar allows the top underneath to shine - not simply covering but *enhancing* the outfit. This is not a jacket to overlook- it is a staple.

ALSO last week we forgot to blog about another basic release, the Natural Goddess Caftan. The same cut and fabric as the black G.C., but in its undyed, natural color. Everything we wrote about the black caftan applies here, but this one is even more beachy, making you feel like a goddess from a more tropical climate ;)

The Basics

For ages we have been considering adding our basics to our web shop. I'm not even sure why it took so long- these pieces have sold so well for us in stores it seems obvious to have them online! So we finally got our act together, and are making these staples available to you.

But not all at once! We wanted to present these items to you one at a time, giving you all the information you need about each one, with stories, testimonials, and descriptions of our favorite elements of each garment. It took us a long time to perfect each addition to this collection, so we want to give each handmade garment the attention it deserves.

On to the Goddess Caftan!

The Name

The first thing to share with you about this beauty is the name. One of our favorite clients commissioned a custom color of this dress for her to wear to events. The first thing out of her mouth trying it on was, "I feel like a Goddess!" Since that moment we have been casually using that name for this piece, telling customers and friends that this dress makes you feel like a goddess. And it's amazing to see how true it is. To make a woman feel like a GODDESS in our garment is really something special! After a year or two of talking this way about this dress, we finally admitted the obvious fact that this dress has a name, and it is Goddess.

The Fabric

We initially made our caftans out of a liquid-like modal knit (and still do- you will see our basic knit version soon!) But we really wanted to dress it up a little, and make a more structured, modern version. We chose to use silk noil- a textured raw silk that has a linen-like feel, but with the gentle drape of silk. It breathes better than other forms of silk, so it more suitable for hot weather. And it holds structure better than knit, giving it a more contemporary, art gallery vibe. Another selling point for raw silk- it's washable! The black dye fades slightly, in a similar way to black denim. We love how it takes on those charcoal undertones, and how the bottom raw hem adds an edginess to the look. But if you're a purist, and love your black garments smooth and dark, you can dry clean it! Dry cleaning preserves the depth of color and the original texture of this silk. Think of the difference in dry cleaning vs. machine washing linen- this is very much like that.

The Cut

Aside from the fabric choice, the cut is the key component of this garment, and the element that has gone through the most evolution. Over the last two years we have tweaked every part of this dress- the armholes, the hem length, the depth of the neckline, everything. After loads of customer feedback, and wearing it ourselves of course, we have finally settled on this rendition. The midi length is perfect for versatility. Worn with bare legs, it is a breezy, sexy summer piece, easily transitioning from the beach to the bar to the bed. But worn with tights or leggings and some boots, this piece is awesome for fall. Some adventurous stylists even wear long sleeves underneath it, but we are still unsure if we like it that way ;)

The armholes on the Goddess Caftan are unique: they are cut on the horizontal, in line with the shoulder seam. Most armholes are cut more or less vertically, in line with the torso. This horizontal line gives the dress a contemporary aesthetic, a flattering shape along the upper arm, and extra room in the bust and torso for added comfort. This dress is flattering on every person we have seen wear it so far! There is just enough sex appeal, and just enough coverage, for many shapes and sizes to look and feel like a goddess.

Up Next

Watch for the Goddess Caftan in Natural coming out next week! The same perfect cut and raw silk as the black, but in an extra Goddess-y undyed cream color. Keep an eye on our Instagram @acg_mpls for the release of all our new basics!

Zoe Prinds-Flash photographed our Fall 2016 Lookbook shoot yesterday, and it was amazing! I haven't seen all the photos yet, but the ones I have seen are INCREDIBLE. There was even a Spice Girls moment, which made my younger self (and my current self, let's get real) squeal with joy. We had 3 fabulous models, a couple of who you may recognize from our spring lookbook, and Sven Clogs generously lent us shoes for the shoot. We were in an absolutely GORGEOUS empty apartment in my building that some lucky go-getter will get to call home next month. But we got to maximize the beauty of the space, and I can't wait to show it to you! Here are a few sneak peeks from my camera and phone, and when Zoe's final shots come in you will definitely hear about it.
